MICHAEL WARDIAN’S RECORD PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS 6TH ANNUAL CAUMSETT 50K; RUDY AFANADOR AND JODI KARTES HEINO ARE TOP LONG ISLAND FINISHERS

Wow, what a performance!  Michael Wardian of Arlington, Virginia beat his nearest competitor on March 2nd  by more than 16 full minutes and  shattered the old course record by more than 9 full minutes, with a 50K time of 2:55:05 in the Caumsett Park 50 Kilometer Run.  This year’s Run once again served as the USATF National 50 Kilometer Road Championship.

Michael led from the start, setting an aggressive early pace in hopes of bettering the USATF National 50K record of 2:51:48 set by Alex Tilson at the Silicon Valley Ultra Classic in 2002.  He was on record setting pace for the first nine loops of the 12 loop course, averaging just under 15 minutes per 2.63 mile loop.  We were certain that the course record would be broken, and we thought that he still had a chance for the National record after 10 laps, but it would have meant a couple of very brisk final laps....but he was slowing.  “I knew I didn’t have the record when I looked at my watch with one mile to go,” he said.

Jason Saita from Parker, Colorado, who won the 2006 edition of Caumsett, was second this year in 3:05:59, and Adam Lint of Patton, PA was third in 3:14:48.  Rudy Afanador was the first Long Island finisher, scoring in 15th place overall in 3:55:37.

Dana Parrot of Tampa, Florida, led the women’s division from start to finish, scoring in 3:50:44.  Jodi Kartes Heino finished in 2nd place overall in 4:21:39, and was, of course, the first Long Islander to cross the finish line.

In spite of the brisk temperatures – the mercury never rose much above 40 degrees – lots of quality performances were posted.  “It was great to see 17 men go under 4 hours today,” said Roy Pirrung, USATF Mountain, Ultra Trail Vice Chair, who also raced in the event, finishing in 4:17:22 to win the 55-59 age group.

Dan Verrington of Bradford, Massachusetts set a pending 45-49 National Age Group record, finishing fifth in 3:17:29.

Thirteen States were represented in this year’s Run, with runners from their 20s to three competitors over 70 years of age.

Kudos to Race Director Carl Grossbard for a job very well done. Carl had some very big shoes to fill.  Run founder Vinny Croce,  the heart and soul of this event since its inception, retired after last year’s event, and Carl very ably followed in Vinny’s footsteps to stage another terrific event in the tradition of the Caumsett 50 K Run.

A special note of thank you to our most appreciated sponsors and supporters: Marc S. Cohen & the Charles Cohen Foundation, Jim Kiley and his staff at Wild by Nature Market of Huntngton, the Melville Marriott with a special thank you to Trish Maulo, and Suffolk County Legislator Jonathan Cooper.  Thanks also to John Snitko of JMS Racing Services for a picture perfect job of “Chip” timing”.  We were also thrilled to have Nancy Hobbs, the Chair of USATF’s Mountain Ultra Trail Council join us for the event this year.
